DEPRESSION IS NOT A CHOICE

Image
DEPRESSION IS  NOT A CHOICE Depression is not a choice... I have often been asked  "Why are you overthinking"?  "Why do you think so negatively"?  "Why can't you just focus on the positive things"?  And every time these questions feel hurtful and awkward at the same time...  I don't wake up and decide to overthink.  I don't inject my brain with negative feelings.  I didn't  choose my depression.  Depression is not a choice.  It’s not just a phase or a mindset, it’s a real mental health condition that can deeply affect a person’s ability to function. Sometimes I wonder, will people ask the same question to someone having a physical illness?  Will someone ask  "Why did your bones break, can't you just try harder to walk"?  "Why is your fever so high, can't you just get rid of it"?  Doesn't it sound weird ...

DEPRESSION : MYTHS VS FACTS

Image
DEPRESSION : MYTHS VS FACTS We often learn to wear a smile, even when things feel heavy inside. From the outside, everything may seem fine, but internally, it can be very different. Yet people sometimes pass casual or insensitive remarks about our mental state. Maybe it comes from a lack of awareness, or maybe they haven’t gone through similar challenges or a phase of depression themselves. I’ve heard such statements too, and they did affect me. So I thought of turning them into something meaningful, something that might help others facing similar situations. What is depression? Depression (Major depressive disorder) is a clinically recognized mental health condition that affects mood, thinking, energy, sleep, and daily functioning. It’s not just sadness, it involves biological, psychological, and environmental factors. With that in mind, here are some common myths and the facts behind them: MYTHS VS FACTS 1.  Myth: “You’re always smiling—you don’t seem depressed.”   ...

THINGS I THOUGHT WERE NORMAL...UNTIL THEY WEREN'T

THINGS I THOUGHT WERE NORMAL                                       Until they weren't..... Many of us go through mental health challenges like anxiety and depression. But we often ignore our symptoms, thinking they are normal… that everyone goes through this. I did the same. The first thing was my sleep.  I started sleeping late every day. My heart would race at 2 a.m., my mind filled with thoughts that wouldn’t slow down. Nights felt darker and scarier than they actually were. I had disturbing dreams, woke up multiple times, and still didn’t feel fresh the next morning. Then there was the crying. I cried almost every day . It came out of nowhere. While listening to a song or hearing something someone said, I would suddenly break down. These were intense, overwhelming bursts of emotion that felt unexpected and hard to control. My body was also giving me signs, but I ignored them. I...

MENTAL HEALTH : THE SILENCE WE NEED TO BREAK

Image
Mental Health: The Silence we Need to Break               It's not just in your head...  People are so understanding when it comes to our physical health. Headache? Take medicines. Fever? Consult a doctor. Leg sprain? Do physiotherapy, take rest. These are the responses we hear when it comes to our physical health. But when the same thing happens to our mind, and we say things like “I’m not well,” “I feel drained,” or “That incident affected me,” the response changes. The irony is , then we hear: “It’s all in your head.” “Just try harder.” “Maybe try for a job.” “Keep yourself busy".  “Ignore it.” Here, consulting a doctor doesn’t even come into the picture. No one really asks about the problem. Everyone just tells you to “try harder.” I was hesitant to seek help at first when it came to my mental health. Thinking about taking therapy made me feel like I wasn’t able to handl...

SMALL BUT HUGE WINS

Image
Small but huge wins... Living with clinical depression is not easy.. We always define depression as just being in a constant mood of sadness... But it is more than just sadness. Depression can affect our lives in multiple ways which makes our daily life and functioning extremely difficult..  Some days even getting up from bed  feels like a huge task, a question arises in the mind - what is the point of getting up, is life worth it? But still, despite all this , if you gathered the courage to get up, that itself is a huge win..  Steps like these may seem nothing to others, but for people battling depression , consider this as a huge win because you gathered the courage, you got up and you chose to face the life as it is.  Mornings seem so dull and heavy and facing the mornings feels like mountain climbing. But step by step if we face those mornings, we slowly begin to face the whole day..  If you brushed  your teeth today that's your second win. This m...
