MENTAL HEALTH : THE SILENCE WE NEED TO BREAK
Mental Health: The Silence we Need to Break
It's not just in your head...
Headache? Take medicines.
Fever? Consult a doctor.
Leg sprain? Do physiotherapy, take rest.
These are the responses we hear when it comes to our physical health.
But when the same thing happens to our mind, and we say things like “I’m not well,” “I feel drained,” or “That incident affected me,” the response changes.
The irony is , then we hear:
“It’s all in your head.”
“Just try harder.”
“Maybe try for a job.”
“Keep yourself busy".
“Ignore it.”
Here, consulting a doctor doesn’t even come into the picture. No one really asks about the problem. Everyone just tells you to “try harder.”
I was hesitant to seek help at first when it came to my mental health. Thinking about taking therapy made me feel like I wasn’t able to handle things, and I felt guilty.
Psychiatric medications sounded scary, like I was putting something harmful into my body.
This kind of taboo still exists in society, even if we say things have improved.
The stigma around mental health affects not only those struggling, but also the people around them. It’s high time we break it.
If we know we should consult a doctor when we feel physically unwell, then we should also consult a psychiatrist or psychologist when our mind feels unwell.
For me, consulting a psychiatrist and taking medication for depression and anxiety has been one of the best decisions in my life. Sometimes I wonder , why did I suffer for so long when I could have taken help?
Taking help doesn’t make you smaller. It makes you courageous, because you are choosing to take care of yourself.
Things are still hard for me. But they are not as hard as before ..They are manageable. I feel reassured when I talk to my doctor and therapist. I take therapy whenever I need it, and I no longer feel the guilt I once had. Now, I know I’m being kind towards myself.
Let's break the silence.
Let’s break the taboo.
Mental health matters.
