DEPRESSION IS NOT A CHOICE
DEPRESSION IS NOT A CHOICE
Depression is not a choice...
I have often been asked
"Why are you overthinking"?
"Why do you think so negatively"?
"Why can't you just focus on the positive things"?
And every time these questions feel hurtful and awkward at the same time...
I don't wake up and decide to overthink.
I don't inject my brain with negative feelings.
I didn't choose my depression.
Depression is not a choice.
It’s not just a phase or a mindset, it’s a real mental health condition that can deeply affect a person’s ability to function.
Sometimes I wonder, will people ask the same question to someone having a physical illness?
Will someone ask
"Why did your bones break, can't you just try harder to walk"?
"Why is your fever so high, can't you just get rid of it"?
Doesn't it sound weird and awkward... Its also insensitive..
Yet people comment so casually on our mental health.
We should start recognizing how inappropriate these questions are and treat mental health with the same understanding as physical health
All of us who are facing mental health struggles genuinely want to come out of this. We do not enjoy this. We didn't choose this...We struggle everyday just to survive, just to function properly..
These statements don't serve us in any way,
That makes it more hurtful, that makes us doubt ourselves more. These make survival even harder...Not because we're weak, but because we're trying hard everyday...
These statements don't help.
What helps is a little more understanding, a little more patience and a little more kindness.
If we can show compassion for physical pain,
we can learn to do the same for mental struggles.
Because no one chooses this.
But everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and understanding while going through this...
Sometimes we just need to know someone else understands....this did that for me.Thank you
